Nilgiri tea is grown at altitude in the hills of Tamil Nadu and known for a brisk, aromatic character. Here is what makes it distinct.
The Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu are one of India's well-known tea-growing regions, alongside Assam and Darjeeling. Tea gardens here sit at altitude, often above 1,000 metres, in a cooler, misty climate.
What sets Nilgiri tea apart
Nilgiri tea is generally known for a brisk, fragrant character and a clear, bright liquor. It's grown more or less year-round, unlike some regions with a single harvest season, which is part of why it's widely used both on its own and in tea blends.
Black and green, from the same hills
The same tea gardens across the Nilgiris typically produce both black and green tea, processed differently from the same tea plant. Black tea is fully oxidised for a stronger, darker cup; green tea is minimally processed for a lighter, grassier one.
What we're bringing to eGhai
Our tea range starts with a black tea and a green tea sourced in connection with the Nilgiris. Exact garden, harvest and processing details are being confirmed with our supplying partners and will be added to each product page as they're available — we'd rather leave a detail blank for now than guess at it.
